It’s not a secret that taking care of your body is one of the most important things in life. And it’s not a secret that mental health is just as important as your physical health: your overall health is important. I have a few simple ways to start a healthier lifestyle!
Let’s start with our physical health. It’s easy to set that goal of achieving a better physical health. It’s usually way more difficult to actually start working on it and to get into it. That’s why I decided to give you five easy ways to start with! I must say, some of these tips can be used to improve your mental health as well, but I’ll use the same tips in that section to make that clear!
Drink more water
I wrote in this blogpost why it’s good to drink more water and how to drink more water. I’m not going to write anything else about drinking more water: just read the blog post if you’re interested and curious!
Exercise 30 minutes a day
It’s so good for your body to exercise for about 30 minutes a day, especially if you have a job that requires you to sit at a desk. You can choose to do a lovely evening or morning walk or take the bike to go grocery shopping, to school or to your work. It doesn’t have to be extreme, walking is just fine! I love to take some time of during the week and walk in the forest.
Eat 3 meals a day
This is basically common knowledge, but it’s the best for your body to have at least three meals a day. I always have three meals a day and I usually have two or three snacks in total during the day. In addition, try to have three balanced meals with enough vegetables and other important nutrients!
Eat more fruit and vegetables
Like I said, try to have enough vegetables a day and try to have two pieces of fruit a day! I’m sure there’s some type of fruit that you’ll love.
Sleep is extremely important for your body, it’s the time where your body recovers from the activities during the day and it’s also the time where you brain processes all the impacts of that day. If you have trouble sleeping, try listening to a calming playlist, listen to a podcast or try meditation or yoga before you go to bed! I try to minimalize my electronic use before I go to bed, which is why I am going to read a book for about 30 minutes to relax my eyes and my mind.
Now onto the next subject of health: our mental health. I mentioned before and I’ll mention it again: mental health is so, so important. It was mental health awareness day this week and I am so happy that mental health is a more and more discussed topic. We need to talk about it. Let’s continue the conversation about mental health and make sure that the people around us that are struggling KNOW that they can talk about it.
As I said, your brain tries to process all the daily impacts that occurred during the previous day while you are sleeping. Personally, I know that I can’t handle the day if I haven’t slept well: I can’t process the impacts during the day if I am already tired. It’s so important for me to have about 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Obviously, I have nights where I don’t even come close to these specific hours but I try to make sure I sleep enough during the other days of the week.
Yoga, meditation or running
This isn’t for everybody, and if you’re not into yoga, meditation or running: try something else that you like. Do you like cycling? Great! Do you love walking with your dog to clear your head? Excellent! We all have to figure out what works for us and our state of mind. I chose these three because it’s my way of clearing my head. Yoga is something I love to do at the end of the evening, to relax and just be at peace for a moment. Meditation is quite new to me and I still need to get into it, but I love to do this in the mornings. As I have mentioned in previous blog posts, I love to run. However, I haven’t ran in a while. I currently have an inflammation in my right hip and upper thigh which means running is impossible for me at the moment. I love to get back into it after this inflammation is gone!
Find your way to express yourself
If you’re not into sports or sporty activities like walking or if it isn’t always doable for you: try to express yourself in another way. For example, for me it’s writing. It doesn’t even matter what I write about, it doesn’t have to be the topic that’s bothering me. Writing just helps me to clear my head!
Don’t be too hard on yourself and think small
Big dreams are great, I love to dream big. The process of reaching this big dream can take months or even years. It’s totally okay and even wise to divide that big dream in smaller dreams to eventually reach that big dream. Don’t get discouraged, don’t give up. You never know how close you are to reaching this dream.
Friendships and relationships
When you’re working on your personal health, it’s good to look at the people around you and think about their influence on you. It’s hard to realize that certain friendships and relationships may not be the best for you. In addition, you may realize what a specific person means to you and has done for you. Show appreciation and just thank them for being your friend.
