I sometimes forget that “today” is more important than yesterday or tomorrow. I’m always looking ahead or back in time and forgetting to be living in the moment. It’s such a waste of time and kinda sad because you’re not fully enjoying the moment.

The future is important and it’s totally okay and even good to think about your future but let’s not forget about “today”. I have a few reasons why living in the moment is good.

It is the only moment you have control over
You can’t control the past and you certainly can’t control the future: but you can control today. You can choose how to live your day: it’s yours to control.

Live life to the fullest
You simply cannot live life to the fullest if you’re not completely in the moment. There are so many little things during the day that you can easily forget or not notice if you’re not living in the moment. Many opportunities arise from these small moments.

Life is short
It’s true, and the time flies by. Life really is short. It feels like every year flies by even faster, the first day of my study feels like yesterday but has already been two years. No one knows how many more moments they have, and I’m not trying to be negative here but it is extremely important to realize. Stop postponing things you want in life because you never know if you’re going to be able to do it at a later moment.

Life is a gift
How cheesy, I know but it is true. Sometimes we take things for granted and assume that it’s normal. You only find out it’s not when something “bad” happens to you or someone around you. Even if it’s just a documentary you’ve watched: it can open your eyes. I have this a lot with documentary’s. They’re sometimes so inspiring while having an impact on your life.

It reduces stress
Stress. I believe my body contains about 70% stress and I’m actually breathing stress. I am stress. But I just recently figured about why I stress so much: and it’s because I worry about the future and things that are going to happen. My stress slowly fades away if I just focus on today. It can be extremely overwhelming if you’re thinking about all the stuff you have to do in the upcoming week(s) and it gives you some peace if you just focus on today.

It’s much easier said than done to live in the moment. I believe it takes practice to start living in the moment, but once you’re getting the hang of it: your life will be much fuller and more appreciative. I’ve talked about gratitude in my latest blogpost: “Gratitude”. But how do you start living in the moment? I have a few tips that’ll help you to live in the present moment.

1 Smile

So simple and easy, yet so important. Start your day with a smile and take all the opportunities during the day. Smiling makes you happier, it keeps you more positive and it gives a positive impact on everyone around you!

2 Appreciate the day

There are so many things during the day we take granted. Soak in as much as you can of the “normal” things during the day. The sounds of chirping birds, the smell of fresh coffee, feel what you feel and don’t hide your emotions.

3 Forget about the past

I can dwell on the past for ages but it’s not going to help “today” or my future. Forget about the past, what’s done is done and learn from mistakes and cherish the good moments. You are in control of the impact it has on your life.

4 Give random acts of kindness

This might be something we all forget sometimes if we’re so busy with our own life. These selfless acts make others smile and help you live in the moment. I love giving compliments to strangers, but I don’t do it that often. It makes me feel good as well, because I know it made that persons day just a little bit brighter. One of the biggest lessons in life is to help others without expecting something back. It can be just little things during the day: help a person that’s struggling with their bags, help the older lady walk the street or offer someone your umbrella when it’s pouring rain.

5 Be thankful

This relates back to my previous blogpost: but being thankful and giving thanks is so important. I believe saying thanks to your family for being there for you during a hard time, or thanking the waitress are little things in life that’ll make your more thankful.

6 Work hard

To live in the moment doesn’t mean you can’t dream about the future. It’s totally okay to dream big, set goals for your future and plan your future. You can’t achieve that goal in the future if you don’t work hard today. However, keep in mind that dreaming about your future won’t replace living in today. Planning your future is great, but sometimes things don’t always go to plan and that’s totally okay.

7 Write it down

I got this tip from a friend, but it’s really helpful to write down all the things during the day that made you happy or just special moments during the day.

I’m working on living in the moment and I am using these tips. Like I said, I feel like living in the moment takes practice as with all things in life. I have a quote to share with you about living in the moment!

“We are very good at preparing to live, but not very good at living. We know how to sacrifice ten years for a diploma, and we are willing to work very hard to get a job, a car, a house, and so on. But we have difficulty remembering that we are alive in the present moment, the only moment there is for us to be alive.” – Thich Nhat Hanh.
