Why be a morning person?

If you wake up earlier in the morning, you have so much more time for personal stuff. I don’t really wake up super early, the earliest I can actually get up kinda “happy” is 7 AM. And only if I go to bed around 10-10:30 PM and that’s not really what I’m good at.

However, if I do wake up around 7 AM (more like 7:30 AM), there’s so much more time for me to move the personal stuff I do at night to the morning. I usually watch a YouTube video or Netflix series at night and I try to move this to the morning so I can sleep earlier at night.

It’s also so much more quiet and peaceful in the morning. I just to love going on runs around 7:30 AM and it feels amazing to be outside at that time. The birds are just waking up and chirping, there’s no one around and I love the nature in the morning as well.

It gave me the perfect start to the morning. Especially now it’s spring and the weather is getting nicer – I’m so ready to start running again now my hip inflammation is almost gone!

15 Secrets To A Productive Morning Routine

There are a few secrets to having a productive morning routine. Don’t we all love secrets, especially if they help us to be more productive?

Wake up early at your right time

Like I just mentioned, you don’t have to wake up at 5 AM. It is important to wake up at your right time instead of trying to wake up at 5 AM ‘cause everyone is saying that’s the right thing to do. It’s never going to work for me to wake up at 5 AM so I will stick to 7 AM or 7:30 AM!

Start a glass of (lemon) water

After you’ve had a night sleep, your body is sort of dehydrated so start your day with a glass of water. You can try to drink lemon water right when you wake up as well. You need to wait 15-30 minutes before eating so the lemon water can do it’s thing in your body.

Start with exercise

This is a perfect activity if you drank lemon water! 30 minutes is the perfect time to do some exercise, whether that’s going on a short run, doing some jump roping, yoga or a regular work out.

Start your morning the evening before

I love doing this at the end of my workday, when I’m done with everything I had to do. You know exactly what needs to be done the next day after you’re done working. So what I always do is make a to-do lists for the next day so I know right away what I need to do when I start working. These can be random things that have nothing to do with work as well – like calling the hairdresser!

Eat the frogs first

Don’t do anything else before you’ve eaten the frogs. The “frog” is the most important task you’re absolutely dreading to get done. The day will go by so much easier if you know the worst thing is out of the way. Moving this to the end of the day is only going to make you less productive because you don’t actually want to eat the frog. This has been me for such a long time because procrastinating is always easier for me than doing the actual dreading task.

No phone until breakfast time

I am so, so guilty of this. I almost immediately grab my phone and scroll through social media when I wake up. My alarm is on my phone so it’s so easy to get lost on social media and stay in bed much longer than you intended to. I do think it’s so much healthier to do all those things I mentioned before and drink the water, do an exercise before you go on social media. Breakfast time is a good moment to scroll through all the apps for a solid 30 minutes.

Eat a healthy breakfast

They always say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I have to agree. It gives me such a boost if I have a healthy breakfast because it helps me stay focused and leaves me feeling full and satisfied for more time as well. I love having oatmeal with cinnamon and almond milk or eating plant based yoghurt with self-made granola! Sometimes I choose to make a smoothie, but I noticed that those don’t fill me up as much as the other two options.

Get enough sleep

Getting around 6-8 hours of sleep is the ideal time for your body to recover from the day before and to help you feel energized the next day. Obviously everyone is different in this. Some people thrive at getting 10 hours of sleep while I feel so tired if I sleep 10 hours a night. My ideal time is around 7 hours of sleep each night!

Combine decisions

I get more stuff done if I combine decisions and tasks. If I need to call a few people, I like to do this at the same time so I have this out of the way. If I need to answer e-mails, I do them all at once. This helps me stay focused and know what I need to do next. It also makes me feel more productive.

Be nice to yourself and practice gratitude

It’s so easy to beat yourself up if you’re not finishing up that task as fast as you wanted. My tip here is to be nice to yourself and practice gratitude. Write down what makes you feel happy and what makes you feel grateful to get your head back into the right mindset.

Read a book

I know it can get hard to read a book if you’re feeling stressed. This happens to me a lot – I feel so busy and stressed that reading a book is just not going to work. A step in between is to read a few pages of magazine to get back into the reading game. I’ve been reading since a while now and even though I sometimes only read 1-2 chapters, it really helps me to relax. I sometimes start the day with reading a book instead of doing some screen time because it helps me to start with my productive morning routine.

Spend time with friends and family

Friends and family keep us sane and make us happy. I wouldn’t be able to work all day long without talking to friends or family. Sometimes I just need a little distraction and have a laugh with friends.

Set goals for the day

To fully optimize the time during the day and not waste time doubting and thinking what I need to do: I make goals. I have different goals each day to keep the variety going and to prevent me from getting bored. Crossing off the goals you’ve reached feels so motivating and helps me to have a productive morning routine.

Clean your workspace

I can be so messy at times but I cannot work when my workspace is messy. So what I do is, I clean my workspace at the end of my workday. I make sure all my cables are in the right place, I clean up all my food and glasses, store my books and planner on the right spot and make sure it’s ready to start the next day fresh! This is really helping me to have a more productive morning routine because starting the day with cleaning is not my ideal morning routine.

Don’t multitask

To be fair, some people thrive if they multitask and I do sometimes too. Just not with combining different tasks. I make sure to stick to one task to have a productive morning routine. Like I just mentioned, I do all my e-mails first before doing something else. I write an entire blogpost before calling someone.

What I do like to do is watching a series or a vlog on the side. I sometimes need to hear people talk whenever I’m working. It is important that it’s not an actual series that I NEED to watch. I like to watch sport events like Formula 1 or re-watch a series. Vlogs are much easier to have on and work at the same time.

Those are my 15 secrets to having a productive morning routine and get your day started on the right foot. You may not always have a productive morning routine, I don’t either. That’s absolutely fine. We can’t be super productive everyday and then it is important to be nice to yourself. We sometimes need a chill day to be productive the next day.

Listen to your body and mind and do what feels right! It is nice to have a productive morning routine but if you want to sleep in instead and have a slower morning: that is absolutely fine!
