Exploring villages is one of my personal favorite things to do when I’m travelling. Especially on road trips. The freedom to stop in a cute village and explore the streets. There are so many gorgeous fairy tale villages in the world to discover. All of these cities are known for picturesque streets, pastel/bright colors and an history to explore.
These 15 postcard fairy tale villages are perfect to write on your list of places to see if you are travelling to one of these countries. You might be closer to them than you think! Don’t forget to fully charge your camera, bring a spare battery and SD card with you, just in case. You don’t want to be standing there with a full SD card or an empty battery. Been there, done that. Always be prepared!

Fairy tale Villages: Colmar, France
Colmar is located in the Elzas of France, on the east side of the country near the German border. This street is known for the Belle & The Beast scenery, the picturesque streets and the pastel colors. Enjoy a walk around Colmar, eat an ice cream next to the water and wander in the fairy tale itself.
Cinque Terre has multiple cities to visit, which makes it a lot of fun to explore and see which one you love most. We all know the amazing scenic pictures from this place. Enjoy the views from here, the pastel colored houses and appreciate the Italian lifestyle.

Bath, United Kingdom
Bath looks like it’s straight out of the Harry Potter movies – which it actually (partially) is! Bath was used to film the Harry Potter movies. Wander in the movie set itself, enjoy the historic buildings and be amazed by the incredible buildings.
Annecy is located in the region Haute-Savoie on the east side of France. It’s definitely not close to Colmar in case you were wondering. This fairy tale village is more down to the southeast of France! It’s known as an art city with magnificent buildings, lovely canals, amazing flowers and colored houses.
This fairy tale village in Italy is located on the Italian Rivièra, in the province Genua. The harbour of Portofino is known to be the prettiest of the Mediterranean. It has the ultimate Italian look – colorful and pastel colored houses next to the ocean.
Sintra is located in the district Lisbon, so it’s near the capital of Portugal: Lisbon. It’s on the other side of the Lisbon so it’s perfect to rent a car in Lisbon and drive to Sintra. The most remarkable building in Sintra is the yellow castle on the hill. It’s incredible and you’ll feel like you are actually in a fairy tale village from a movie.

Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina
Mostar is among other things known for the river and the bridge. It’s an amazing sight to see! Mostar is located in Bosnia & Herzegovina, on the south of Herzegovina. The capital Sarajevo is 80 kilometres away from Mostar. This fairy tale village makes you jump back in time, especially at night time when the village becomes more and more quiet.
Halong Bay, Vietnam
Halong Bay is one of the floating villages in Vietnam. Very exclusive, but gorgeous to see. It will be one of the most special things you’ll ever see, since a floating village itself is already rare. Combine this with the amazing views around you, the lovely community in Vietnam and the food – you’re in for a real fairy tale experience in this postcard village.

Rothenburg is located near Neurenberg in the gorgeous country of Germany. Germany is the perfect place to find fairy tale villages, especially if you’re looking for castles along the way. This country has so many incredible castles, it’s just crazy and absolutely beautiful!
Hallstatt is a fairy tale village, but absolutely fairy tale like, next to a lake and in between the mountains. What I just said about Germany: it’s the same in Austria. I absolutely love Austria, it doesn’t matter where you go: it is always just as gorgeous. Did you known that China rebuild this village in their own country? It’s crazy popular. Be nice to the locals and respect the place when you go here!
Fenghuang is an ancient town in the province Hunan in China. It literally means phoenix – a rising bird. The best way to explore this fairy tale village is by wandering around the old streets and enjoy every single aspect of this ancient town.
Mont Saint-Michel, France
The special village of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy. Normandy itself is an incredible region to explore, it holds a lot of memories from World War II, something we can and shall never forget. Mont Saint-Michel is the high village in the middle of the bay and you can only reach this when the water is low! It’s known as a western fairy tale and just by standing there and looking at it – It gives you goose bumps!

Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
The Czech Republic isn’t particularly popular, besides a few of the bigger cities. But let me tell you, Karlovy Vary is a gorgeous fairy tale village. It’s like you’re walking in a postcard. The colors, the streets, the river, the greenery… it is an incredible town to explore in the Czech Republic!
Burano is a region from Venice and it is just as gorgeous as the city of Venice. The canals, the very colorful houses and the small shops are perfect to enjoy if you wander around having a lovely ice cream. Burano is located on an island in the Lagoon of Venice which already gives me those incredible postcard vibes.

I’m ending this list of gorgeous fairy tale villages with a bang – Cappadocia is an amazing fairy tale village to visit. Not even because of the village itself, but because of the hot air balloons. Take a ride in one of them or enjoy them from the rooftops. Especially during sunsets and sunrises. It will be like you’re witnessing a postcard coming to life right in front of your eyes. There’s just something about hot air balloons.
I’m so ready and excited to start including fairy tale villages to my own travel itineraries. They’re gorgeous. And a little side note – I need a pastel colored house right now. These cities are all amazingly diverse and authentic to visit, while they’re all giving off those fairy tale and postcard vibes. That’s what makes travel so special. We can travel the world, see a million things, but we still get goose bumps from simple things like a picturesque street. Stay grateful, stay humble and always live in the moment when we travel.
